Afzal Syed

Afzal Syed did his PhD work at the University of Basel, Switzerland, where he studied the role of microRNAs and splicing factors in maintaining and establishing of cell identities. At Helmholtz Zentrum Munich, he dissected transcriptional regulation of a nuclear hormone via a high-throughput CRISPR-Cas9 screen to discover novel transcriptional co-regulators and to characterize the role of non-coding RNAs. He now has a shared position at DKFZ Single Cell Open Lab. He works on developing single cell multi-omics methods and applying them to hematological malignancies. A focus of his work is studying the molecular epigenetic deregulation and resistance mechanisms in different sub types of acute myeloid leukemia.
